Jane Ogilvie
A.R.C.T.(Teachers), R.M.T.
Jane has taught all ages from early beginner to grade ten levels including the three basic levels of theory rudiments. Her teaching style emphasizes a clear understanding of rhythmic, harmonic and technical fundamentals and especially finding enjoyment and personal expression in music. She is comfortable teaching a variety of musical styles from classical to contemporary, to children and adults alike, whether preparing students for exams and festivals or following their own course of study. Interested students are given the option to participate in RCM exams, local festivals, student recitals and supplementary group exam preparation classes.
A Calgary native, Jane began studying piano in 1978. She is fortunate to have studied piano privately for sixteen years with Bev Lynch and theory with Bev Lynch, Norma Stang, Howard Janzen and Ronald Proctor. Jane worked her way through the Royal Conservatory of Music system until completing the ARCT Teacher’s practical exams in 1995 and, after returning from a few years abroad, completing the theory levels required for the ARCT Teacher’s Diploma in 1999.
Jane continues to broaden her studies. In 2016, she had the opportunity to study flamenco piano with renowned pianist Dorantes at a week long workshop in Utrera, Spain.
In 1989, Jane began teaching privately after finishing her grade eight exams. A year later, she also began teaching at Studio 9 School of Music in Calgary and continued to teach both there and privately until moving to Edmonton in 2000. In Edmonton she taught from 2001 – 2012 at Caesar’s School of Music. Currently she offers lessons out of her home studio.
Jane is a full member of the ARMTA
(Alberta Registered Music Teacher’s Association).
In addition to teaching music, Jane performs, teaches and continues to study Flamenco dance and song and was the Artistic Director of the now closed Edmonton Flamenco Festival. She holds a BFA in printmaking from the University of Calgary and freelances as a graphic artist.
